New ski resort in Himalaya

Great grandson of Henry Ford, Alfred Ford’s dream of setting up a massive Himalayan ski resort was resuscitated last week when a Himachal Pradesh High Court judge ruled that Ford’s “Himalayan Ski Village” project can go forward.

The project is being pursued by Himalayan Ski Village Private Ltd. Situated between 7,500 and 14,000 feet of elevation at the northern end of the Kullu Valley in the state of Himachal Pradesh, where helicopter skiing has been available for the past decade. Plans in the works include 700 hotel rooms and restaurants in an Indian themed base village, a 20,000 square foot convention center, spa and an entertainment/performing arts center.

Following last month’s court decision that gave a green light to Alfred Ford’s massive multi-billion dollar Himalayan Ski Village project, the Himachal Pradesh state government this week indicated that it will appeal that decision to a higher court.

Ford, the great-grandson of Henry Ford and presumptive heir to the Ford family fortune, has been fighting to build the massive ski resort near Manali since 2004. The Himachal Pradesh government initially backed the project and signed a memorandum of understanding with Himalayan Ski Village Private Ltd., developer of the ski resort, before the Bharatiya Janata Party came to power in 2007 and, facing environmental opposition, rescinded the project’s approval in 2010, prompting the current legal action.

I heard so many people talking about Himalayan skiing. I reckon the quality will be better than Hokkaido, but anyone have been there before? Share the experience about the transport and security.

Most people go to Gulmarg when talk about skiing Himalayas. The nearest airport is Srinagar, from Srinagar you travel to Gulmarg by car, journey time is about 3 hours.

Are you worried about security in terms of "law and order" or war? Gulmarg is in Kashimar, which is under dispute between India and Pakistan, so .....

Gulmarg village sits high above the Kashmiri plateau at about 2,700m. The area is close to the disputed Pakistan-India border and there is no escape from the huge military presence in the resort and the surrounding area.

In terms of skiing terrain, Gulmarg has the highest gondola in the world, top of the gondola is at about 4,000m with the summit of Mt Apharwat another couple of hundred metres higher, which provides more than 1,500 metres of vertical. If you are an advanced skier, this is the place to explore.

警告 Himalayan big mountain riding

Hi to all my fellow powder pilgrims, winter is knocking!

I'm the owner and founder of K-Line, Gulmarg's premier backcountry adventure co. I'm currently in Hong Kong to promote riding in Gulmarg along with our ski and boarding adventures. We are planing a drinks/information evening so please let me know if you are interested.

We have been running some trips over the last 2 seasons with some large groups out of Hong Kong and Singapore. We have both big group capacity or private bookings for small groups.

So spread the word and try something new this winter. Take an adventure not a snow holiday!

Peace out, enjoy the ride!

Just read the following report:
A department of the Jammu and Kashmir state government has announced that it will provide snow making equipment to Gulmarg to help raise Gulmarg's status as the premier ski destination in central Asia. Ghulam Ahmad Mir, Minister for Tourism, told local press that he hopes to have the snow making equipment in place “by the end of this year” to enable snow making to begin by the 2014-15 season.
Mir did not elaborate on which facilities at Gulmarg would receive snow making coverage, but said that the installation would include both fixed and mobile guns. Earthworks to prepare slopes for snow making are also set to take place next summer.

The ski season normally opens at Gulmarg in January, but Mir indicated that the snow making facilities will enable the resort to open in mid-November each year as his department prefers. Mir also said that his department is seeking a suitable location in the nearby Pahalgam Valley to construct additional skiing facilities in India.
